Trip Overview

The Dolpo Trek is a remote trekking journey in the Dolpo region of Nepal, located in the western Himalayas. It is known for its beautiful mountain landscapes, traditional villages, and strong Tibetan-influenced culture. The trek passes through high mountain passes, ancient monasteries, and the famous Phoksundo Lake inside Shey Phoksundo National Park. Because Dolpo is a restricted and less visited area, the trek offers a quiet and authentic Himalayan experience and is suitable for trekkers looking for adventure and natural beauty.

Detailed Itinerary

After arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative will receive you and transfer you to the hotel. After checking in, you can rest or walk around the lively streets of Thamel. In the evening, we will briefly discuss the trek and check the plan for the coming days.

Today is mainly for trek preparation. You will meet your guide and check trekking equipment. If anything is missing, it can easily be bought or rented in the trekking shops around Thamel. The rest of the day is free, and you can explore some cultural places in Kathmandu or simply relax at the hotel.

After breakfast, we take a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, which lies in the lowland region of western Nepal. The flight takes about one hour. Nepalgunj is quite different from Kathmandu, with a warmer climate and a mix of cultures. We stay overnight here before flying to Dolpa the next morning.

An early morning flight brings you into the mountains, landing at Juphal airstrip. The trek begins with a descent through cultivated fields, following the Thuli Bheri River to Dunai, the administrative center of Dolpo.

The trail follows the river valley through pine forests and traditional villages. Tarakot is a historic fortress settlement that once served as a trade hub along the salt route between Tibet and Nepal.

The landscape becomes increasingly rugged as you enter narrower gorges. Suspension bridges, cliffs, and remote campsites define this stretch. Altitude gain becomes noticeable.

A gradual ascent continues along the Tarap Khola. Vegetation becomes sparse, replaced by alpine terrain. Camps are set in isolated riverbank clearings.

You arrive at one of the most culturally significant villages in Dolpo. Do Tarap is home to both Buddhist and Bon communities, featuring ancient monasteries and prayer walls.

Essential for altitude adaptation, this day includes short hikes and exploration of monasteries such as Ribo Bhumpa. Interaction with locals offers insight into traditional Himalayan lifestyles largely unchanged for centuries.

The trail climbs steadily toward the high mountain passes. The environment becomes stark and wind-swept, with dramatic views of snow-capped peaks.

This is one of the most demanding days of the trek. Crossing Numa La Pass offers panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri range. The descent to Pelung Tang is steep and requires caution.

After crossing Numa La, the trail descends gradually through open alpine terrain with expansive mountain views. The landscape remains dry and rugged, but conditions become slightly warmer as you lose altitude. Overnight at a quiet campsite in Dajok Tang.

Continue descending into greener surroundings as vegetation begins to appear. The trail passes through scenic landscapes with waterfalls and forested sections before reaching Ringmo, a traditional village near Phoksundo Lake.

A rest day to explore the lake and surrounding area. Enjoy short hikes to viewpoints, visit local monasteries, and take in the stunning turquoise waters. This day also supports recovery after high-altitude trekking.

Descend along the river through pine and birch forests. The trail includes waterfalls and suspension bridges, offering a more scenic and comfortable walking experience compared to earlier high-altitude sections.

The final day of trekking follows an easy downhill route through villages and farmland. Arrive at Juphal, marking the end of the trek, with time to relax and celebrate the journey.

An early morning flight takes you back to Nepalgunj. Due to mountain weather, delays are possible, so flexibility is important.Once in Nepalgunj, you can enjoy a comfortable hotel stay and warmer climate after days in the mountains.

Our  return to Kathmandu by flight. After arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy free time to rest, explore, or dine in the city.

This day is kept as a buffer in case of flight delays. If not needed, it can be used for sightseeing, shopping, or relaxation after the trek.

Transfer to the airport for your international departure, marking the end of your Lower Dolpo adventure.
