Mount Baruntse is a high Himalayan mountain located in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal, with an official elevation of 7,129 meters (23,389 ft) above sea level. It is part of the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas and is geographically positioned between the Hunku Glacier to the south, the Barun Glacier to the east, and the Imja Glacier to the northwest. The mountain features four main summits and is considered one of the classic 7,000‑meter peaks of the Nepal Himalaya.
Baruntse occupies a central position among some of the world’s highest peaks and lies south of the Everest‑Lhotse‑Nuptse massif and west of Makalu. From its summit, climbers can see Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and other Himalayan giants on a clear day.
Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Spend the evening settling in, relaxing after your flight, and attending a short welcome briefing to meet the expedition staff.
This day is dedicated to expedition preparation. Complete trekking and climbing permit formalities, review your equipment with guides, and attend detailed safety briefings. Team discussions will cover route strategy, acclimatization schedules, and emergency procedures.
Take a scenic morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest-Barun region. Begin trekking along the Dudh Koshi and Barun River valleys, gradually gaining altitude to reach Chutanga. The trail offers picturesque Himalayan views and your first introduction to high-altitude trekking.
Today’s trek includes crossing the challenging Zatrwa La Pass, a high mountain pass offering panoramic views of surrounding peaks. Descend gradually to Thuli Kharka for overnight camp. This day demands careful pacing for acclimatization and energy conservation.
Descend through alpine valleys and moraines to Kothe, passing through streams and small Sherpa settlements. Kothe is a traditional village offering cultural immersion and serves as a checkpoint for climbers heading higher.
The trail ascends steadily through high-altitude terrain, with views of Baruntse and Makalu. Thangnak provides basic facilities for trekkers and climbers, preparing for the approach to higher camps. Acclimatization begins to play a crucial role.
Trek from Thangnak to Khare, which serves as the last stop before Baruntse Base Camp. The terrain becomes rocky and glacial, and trekkers experience noticeable effects of altitude, making hydration and pacing essential.
Spend a rest day at Khare to allow your body to adjust to high altitude. Short exploratory hikes around Khare help improve acclimatization and reduce the risk of altitude-related illness.
Descend slightly to Kongma Dingma, traversing moraines and ridges with stunning views of the Barun Valley. This moderate trek aids in acclimatization before ascending further to Seto Pokhari and Baruntse Base Camp.
Ascend to Seto Pokhari, a scenic glacial lake area at the foot of Baruntse. This camp serves as a staging area for the final trek to Base Camp and provides the first close-up views of the Baruntse summit.
Trek to Baruntse Base Camp, establishing the central hub for your climbing operations. Teams will organize tents, review route plans, and perform initial acclimatization rotations. Base Camp life includes preparation for high-altitude climbing and coordination with Sherpa guides.
Climbing operations begin. A typical progression involves:Base Camp (5,400 m): Final preparations and acclimatization.
Camp I (~5,800 m): Initial ascent with support from Sherpas and fixed ropes.
Camp II (~6,400 m): Higher glacier slopes and mixed climbing terrain.
Camp III (~6,900 m): Advanced high-altitude camp, staging for the summit.
Summit Push (7,129 m): Climbing across steep snow slopes, ice ridges, and exposed sections. Weather conditions and team acclimatization dictate the exact summit date.
Experienced Sherpa guides, fixed ropes, and safety protocols support climbers throughout. Rotation days for acclimatization and rest are included to maximize safety and success.
Descend from Baruntse to Amphu Lapcha Base Camp. This area serves as the staging point for the technical Amphu Lapcha Pass crossing, connecting the Barun Valley to the Imja and Khumbu regions.
Early morning ascent of Amphu Lapcha Pass, a technical high pass with snow and ice sections. Descend to Chukhung, a scenic Sherpa settlement, for overnight rest and recovery
Retrace the trail through the Dudh Koshi and Imja valleys, descending through alpine forests and crossing suspension bridges before reaching the vibrant Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar.
Final trekking day along the Dudh Koshi Valley. Celebrate the completion of your high-altitude expedition upon arrival in Lukla.
